Cambridge ESOL teaching awards

TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) and TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) are umbrella terms for all the various English language teaching awards available worldwide.  As such, all Cambridge ESOL teaching awards are 'TEFL courses' (or 'TESOL courses').

DELTA at ITI

DELTA (Diploma in English Language Teaching to Adults) is an advanced teaching qualification for experienced teachers.

The Cambridge ESOL DELTA teaching award is now in a new modular format that makes it more convenient for working teachers.

The modular DELTA consists of three modules, each of which links into and supports the others. In theory, the modules can be done in any order but in practice it's best to do them in the order they're presented below, i.e., Module 1, then Module 2, then Module 3.

DELTA Module 1

Understanding Language, Methodology and Resources

We are offering two DELTA Module 1 courses in 2009, one part-time course over eight weeks beginning early April, and one full-time course over 2 weeks beginning early June.

Your performance in Module 1 will be assessed by examination, in June if you attended the part-time course, or in December if you attended the full-time course. The exam consists of two papers of 90 minutes each with a 30 minute break between them.

We will be offering an on-line DELTA Module 1 course in the near future, priced at 250 GBP.

On-line group projects

Once you have been accepted for the course and we have received your deposit payment you will be sent a set of login details and directed to our on-line 'Module 1 Study Room' where the on-line group projects will take place.

Directed study

Part-time attendees will be expected to do between 10 and 15 hours of directed study each week. Time spent collaborating on online group projects is part of the directed study requirement but not all of it.

DELTA Module 2

Developing Professional Practice

Our December 2008 to June 2009 part-time DELTA Module 2 course is now full.

Our next part-time DELTA Module 2 course will run from October 2009 to March 2010.

We hope to run a full-time DELTA Module 2 course over 5 weeks in June and July (exact dates to be confirmed).

Components of DELTA Module 2

10 peer observations

You must observe 10 lessons of your fellow attendees' teaching. This invariably involves travelling to other schools. You must also write about your observations as part of the evaluation assignment and be prepared to be observed by your fellow attendees in turn.

4 assessed teaching assignments

You must teach 2 unassessed and 4 assessed lessons. Each teaching assignment is observed by a tutor and includes a 2500 word background written assignment. Your last teaching assignment will be externally assessed, i.e., the tutor will come from a different training centre.

Written assignment

You must complete a 5000 word written assignment divided into two halves. The first half is a 2500 word evaluation of your own teaching practice, the second half a 2500 word evaluation of a teaching technique or method that is new to you.

DELTA Module Three

Extending Practice and ELT Specialism

Our DELTA Module 3 course will be available on demand by June 2009 at the latest, (precise dates to be confirmed).

Module Three consists entirely of a single written assignment of 4000-4500 words in which you design a course for a particular group of learners.

You must complete the assignment individually, using resources that are part of your directed reading (including online resources) and self-study guides.

Tutor support and guidance on early drafts of your assignment will be available.

We will also offer an on-line 'Module 3 Study Room' if enough candidates are simultaneously enrolled and interested in the motivation that peer support can provide.

The fee for DELTA Module 3 is 300 GBP.

Application procedure

Applicants must observe the following application procedure:

1. Complete the online application form (including the written assignment).  Upon receipt of a successfully completed application form we will contact you to arrange a date for your interview.
2. Your interview may be conducted individually or as part of a group, and you should allow at least one and a half hours for the process.
3. At the interview you will be set a language awareness task, a teaching methodology awareness task, and you may also be asked to write another short essay.  The aim of these tasks is to help us assess your suitability for the course, as well as your ability to develop an awareness of language.
4. We will ask you your views on language learning and teaching.
5. If successful you will be offered a place on the next available course and asked to pay a non-refundable £200 (GBP) deposit to secure your place on that course.  Payment may be in cash, by cheque, or via electronic transfer, e.g., internet banking.  Bank account details are available upon request.  See the contact page for details of our postal address (for cheque payments).

If you cannot be in İstanbul for your interview we will send you a set of questions designed to help you prepare for a telephone interview which will last approximately thirty minutes.  As with face-to-face interviews, you will be set a number of tasks which we will expect you to complete and then email to us as soon as your telephone interview is over.
